INTRODUCING: TAKE A BREATH…..INSPIRE PEACE (“TAB”)
A Schoolwide Mindfulness Program
The leaders of the Mindfulness through Movement program have designed a schoolwide curriculum in response to classroom teachers always asking us: “We love your program but why can’t you teach ALL of the grades?”
Unfortunately, we don’t have enough trained MTM teachers to teach every grade. However, we listened to what schools need, and what we do have are classroom teachers who we can train to teach mindfulness to their students.
With a generous donation from the Caroline Alexander Buck Foundation, we have created a curriculum that will work in any school. Scripts are provided for “Mindful Moments”, pauses during the day where an entire class can stop, do a breathing exercise, or stand up and do a yoga pose. A pause during the day for students to reflect, to calm themselves, to check in with how they are feeling. It’s an opportunity for students (and teachers) to Take A Breath!
MTM will also assist teachers with creating a more mindful classroom, including Peace Corners in the classroom. At times, every classroom has students who are quick to anger, become anxious or perhaps sensitive to what is happening in the class or in their personal lives. This corner creates a brief, non-punishing “time-out” welcoming students to take a few moments to relax and calm down and tune in to how they are feeling.
Introduced in the Fall of 2023, the TAB Pilot Program was launched at the following schools:
- St. Martin de Porres
- Overbrook Educational Center
- Hope Partnership for Education
We are excited about introducing this programming to schools and hope to add more schools in the future.
